Borgetti's milestone helps lift Mexico, US down Trinidad
Jared Borgetti became Mexico's all-time leading scorer as Mexico beat Costa Rica 2-0 in Mexico City on Wednesday to edge ever closer to a 2006 FIFA World Cup berth.
Borgetti opened the scoring against an ultra-defensive Costa Rica in the 63rd minute, his 36th goal for Mexico taking him past Carlos Hermosillo and Luis Hernandez on his country's most-prolific list. Francisco Fonseca scored the insurance goal in the 85th as Mexico remained unbeaten in the final six-nation qualifying group from North and Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF).
Mexico have won five of their six matches so far, with one draw, to head the standings with 16 points as they look toward an anticipated showdown with the United States on September 3 in Columbus, Ohio.
The United States, who beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 earlier, have 15, as both nations have all but booked their tickets to Germany. The top three teams in the final qualifying phase automatically advance, while the fourth-placed team will play off with a team from Asia for a berth.
In East Hartford, Connecticut, Brian McBride's goal 91 seconds into the match was enough to give the United States a 1-0 victory. With less than two minutes gone, Bobby Convey breached Trinidad's defence and slipped a cross to McBride, who easily beat helpless goalkeeper Kelvin Jack. It was McBride's 29th goal for Team USA, second to Eric Wynalda on the all-time list.
Costa Rica's path to the finals was muddied by the defeat, which left them with seven points, the same as Guatemala who beat Panama 2-1 at home. Trinidad and Tobago have four points and Panama bring up the rear with two.
Guatemala kept themsleves in the hunt thanks to an injury time goal by Gonzalo Romero, which lifted the hosts toa 2-1 win over Panama in Guatemala City. Panama's Jorge Dely Valdez opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and it wasn't until the 69th that Carlos Ruiz was able to equalize, and Romero to snatch the victory.
