Seven teams battle for three remaining World Cup R of 16 spots

There will be suspense aplenty as the curtain falls on Group E today, with Czech Republic, Italy, Ghana and the USA all still hopeful of qualifying. Group F is a little less open after Brazil sealed their passage last time out, but the Seleçao’s next opponents Japan have their sights set on the second available berth, as do group rivals Croatia and Australia.

Czech Republic - Italy, 16:00 (CET), Hamburg, Group E. Italy need just a draw to book their place in the Round of 16, but the Czechs will be out to take all three points and make sure of their own continued participation. Karel Bruckner's men must again make do with a decimated attack, but there is very little chance of them sitting back, as a point would leave their fate dependent on the Ghana-USA result.

Ghana - USA, 16:00, Nuremberg, Group E. Having registered a fine victory over the Czech Republic, Ghana can now seal what would be an historic spot in the knock-out stage. A win over the USA would take them through regardless of other results, and even a stalemate would suffice if Italy overcame the Czechs. As for the Stars and Stripes, while they may not be masters of their own destiny, they have an outside chance of grabbing second place if they secure maximum points.

Japan - Brazil, 21:00, Dortmund, Group F. Japan's hopes appear slim as they line up to face the world champions, but a victory by three goals combined with either a draw or a Croatian win in the other game would nonetheless see them qualify. For the Brazilians, this will be an opportunity to build on previous performances and rotate the squad.

Croatia - Australia, 21:00, Stuttgart, Group F. Should Japan fail to see off Brazil by three clear goals, Guus Hiddink's Australia would need just a single point against Croatia to keep their campaign alive. The Balkan side will also be praying Japan fall short, but can afford nothing less than a win of their own to keep their side of the bargain. With everything so tight, goal difference could prove to be the deciding factor... so calculators at the ready!
