World Cup berth at stake: It's Uruguay-Australia II

Uruguay will face Oceania champions Australia in a FIFA World Cup play-off next month after clinching fifth place in the South America zone qualifiers with a 1-0 win over Argentina.

Inter Milan striker Alvaro Recoba was the match winner with a 47th minute goal to put Uruguay on 28 points, one ahead of Colombia, who beat Paraguay 1-0 in Asuncion.

The first leg of the play-off will be held in Montevideo on November 12, with the second leg in Sydney four days later. When Uruguay and Australia faced off in identical circumstances for the 2002 FIFA World Cup the South Americans took the honours with a 3-1 aggregate scoreline.

Elsewhere Wednesday Brazil rounded off their qualification campaign in style with a 3-0 rout of Venezuala in Belem. Adriano put the world champions ahead on the half hour mark with Ronaldo and his Real Madrid teammate Roberto Carlos adding two second half goals.

Brazil and Argentina finish level on 34 points, with Brazil topping the table on goal difference. In other final day qualifiers Chile and Ecuador carved out a goalless draw in Santiago, while Peru saw off bottom of the table Bolivia 4-1 in Tacna.

Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Ecuador had already sealed their tickets to Germany next year by filling the top four places in the table.
