World Cup Preview: Argentina vs Germany Quarterfinals Matchup

The rivalry between Argentina and Germany is an old one, including two World Cup finals, with one victory each. And it's bubbling up again.

The teams meet again Friday, when the quarterfinal in Berlin puts Argentine wonder boy Lionel Messi and Lukas Podolski of Germany on center stage. But for the two young stars, the World Cups that started it all exist only in the books — or the videos.

Messi, who just turned 19, wasn't even born when Diego Maradona led Argentina to a 3-2 win over Germany in the 1986 final in Mexico. Four years later, Germany took its revenge, disposing 1-0 of Argentina to win its third world title.

The free-flowing hosts surged into the last eight with a 2-0 win over 10-man Sweden and will be meeting the South Americans for the fifth time at the finals in a match that promises to be a tight affair. Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann was part of the team that beat Argentina 1-0 in the 1990 World Cup final in Italy and took revenge for the 3-2 defeat to the Argentines in the 1986 final in Mexico.

The Argentines, who like Germany have scored 10 goals and only conceded two en route to the last eight, will take comfort and inspiration from their overall record in this tantalizing fixture. In 16 full international levels there have been five wins for Germany, four draws, and seven Argentine victories.

World Cup Game Tips: Germany to beat Argentina, 2-1.
