First place up for grabs in Germany vs Ecuador

Ecuador and Germany are already through to the next round, but face each other in their third group match to decide who is to take the top spot in Group A. Against all expectations, Ecuador lead after two games and a draw would be enough for them to win this group.

The South Americans will probably rest the slightly injured Carlos Tenorio, and Ivan Kaviedes is expected to start in his place. Germany boss Jürgen Klinsmann has two injuries to worry about. Torsten Frings is struggling with a calf injury and Christoph Metzelder has knee problems.

Ecuador are one of the major revelations of the tournament so far. In their only previous World Cup appearance, in 2002, they won one match but lost two, and finished fourth in a group with Mexico, Italy and Croatia.

Four years ago, Germany's position was not as comfortable as it is now. The three-times World Champions needed at least a draw with Cameroon to advance and second-half goals from Bode and Klose took the team to the round of sixteen.

Head to head:

These two teams have never met each other before.

Probable line-ups:

Ecuador: Cristian Mora, Ulises de la Cruz, Ivan Hurtado, Giovanny Espinoza, Neicer Reasco, Edison Mendez, Edwin Tenorio, Segundo Castillo, Luis Antonio Valencia Agustin Delgado, Ivan Kaviedes.

Germany: Jens Lehmann, Arne Friedrich, Christoph Metzelder, Per Mertesacker, Philipp Lahm, Bernd Schneider,Tim Borowski, Michael Ballack, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose.
