World Cup heavyweights aim to progress: England, Netherlamds, Portugal all in action
The Round of 16 continues apace with a FIFA World Cup first as England line up against Ecuador, while old foes Portugal and Netherlands lock horns in the second fixture.
The matches
England-Ecuador, 17:00 (CET), Stuttgart
Though these two sides have never met at a FIFA World Cup, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake, both coaches will have done their homework. So far, Ecuador have been one of the revelations of the tournament, progressing through Group A with a seductive approach to the game, while their opponents just about achieved what was required of them. Joe Cole's vivacious wing play has been a boon to the former world champions, but the serious injury to Michael Owen has left them dependent on the much-debated fitness of Wayne Rooney.

Portugal–Netherlands, 21:00, Nuremberg
Portugal advanced with relative ease through the group phase and now find themselves in the second round for the first time in 40 years. The Netherlands are the side hoping to stop them in their tracks, and they served up some excellent football on the way to finishing second behind Argentina in a tough group. History seems to favour the Portuguese, though, as they have won five of their nine clashes with the Dutch, drawing three and losing just one.
